HyVee Triathlon Bike Route

I talked to teammate Braxton last week about HyVee’s 2011 bike route and about barfed when he mentioned Grand Avenue.  Seriously. If you live in Des Moines, you’ll immediately know why.  Hills.  I’ve had to drive Grand a few times in the last week and each time I got sick to my stomach thinking that if my Honda Element noticed the hills, my short bike (and short legs) surely would too.

Well, I decided finally to look at this year’s map.  Lo and Behold: NO GRAND AVENUE!  Yes, there are some quick hills and a long incline, but right off the swim it is pretty flat and in areas I’m quite familiar so I can catch my breath before the big incline.  Towards the end there is a long downhill and a few quick hills, but nothing crazy immediately before the run (or as I’ve resigned to call it, the “run/walk”).  Also, it is a much more spectator-friendly route as it doubles back so hopefully we’ll all get a boost from more cheering!

Between this new revelation and the few glasses of wine I’ve enjoyed, I’m going to sleep much better tonight.
