When I was a kid on the swim team, NOBODY wore nose clips or plugs to swim. They’d have been laughed all the way back to the locker room. I’m sure swimmers who grew up when I did were equally shocked to hear that nose clips are cool now. At first I thought it was a joke, “Mom, are you sure those aren’t breathe right strips?” but then I decided to research and it kind of makes sense.
In this article, the author explains that nose clips offer a benefit to backstrokers who take advantage of their speed in the underwater portion of the race. I also enjoyed reading the comments from other swimmers talking about their views of (and/or experience using) nose clips after the article.
Check out this video of Missy Franklin making nose clips AWESOME! I think that today’s swim kids (at least the backstrokers) will all be sporting nose clips now, and none of them will be getting laughed at.
